The majority of people, governments, and businesses all over the world want them to be banned. Despite the international agreement to reduce the number of nuclear weapons, the world still has approximately 155,000 weapons. This movement was the catalyst for the United Nations’ call for a global ban on nuclear weapons.ĭespite the increased risk of use, nuclear weapons remain a threat. For many years, survivors of the atomic bombing have fought for recognition of the destructive power of nuclear weapons. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were victims of human tragedies that should never be repeated. Nagasaki was also hit by an atomic bomb three days later, killing 50,000 to 100,000 people. The death toll in Hiroshima has generally been between 100,000 and 180,000 people. The bomb, which caused a fireball, ripped 13 square kilometers out of the city. On the evening of August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. As of the end of WWII, approximately 148,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and another 74,000 died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 killed and injured hundreds of thousands of people, and their effects are still felt today. Within a 6-kilometer radius, the bomb generates 180 tonnes of force on the walls of all two-story buildings, and wind speeds of 255 kilometers per hour are expected within a one-kilometer radius.
